While I was pregnant the most popular comment I would recieve, besides "congratulations", was "good luck getting a good night's sleep". Like there is this law that once you have a baby you will never sleep through the night again. Most of the time, without missing a beat, I would say or whisper to myself "not my baby, she is going to sleep and so am I".
Sleep is essential for me. If you are like me, I am not the kind of person who can simply operate on three or five hours of sleep. I need a solid eight hours to make it through a day. So the thought of not getting sleep after my daughter was born put me into a "read every baby sleep book" panic mode.
Here are the books I read that were helpful:
Secrets of the Baby Whisperer, By: Tracy Hogg
The Baby Sleep Solution, By: Suzy Giordano
The Good Sleeper, By: Janet Krone Kennedy
This next book; however, was a game changer and completely changed the way I thought about getting my baby to sleep through the night. I highly recommend this book to any parent who wants to get a good night's sleep on a regular basis.
Also, side note, the first two to three months are a little more tricky because babies are growing so much they need to eat more frequently. So I was up with her throughout the night to feed her for the first couple months. But my daughter was sleeping through the night four nights out of the week by the time she was four months old. Then around six months old she was sleeping through the night on a pretty consistent basis. I am so thankful I read this book. Author, Harvey Karp, provides an excellent case for the "5 S's" (swaddling, side/stomach position, shushing, swinging, and sucking) and offers a plethora of other useful information when it come to getting your little one to sleep. If you haven't read it yet, follow this link to get your copy today.
Another life saver was the Dreamland Baby Sleepsack. We tried numerous sleep sacks and baby swaddles to help her stay comfortable and sleep through the night. But the best investment we ever made, with her sleep in mind, was the Dreamland Baby Sleep Sack. The sleep sack helps prevent her from startling herself (nice try Moro Reflex 😉) in between sleep cycles and provides a light weight for comfort also. The entire design is great and well made. Now when someone asks how much I miss sleeping at night, it feels so great saying, "Oh she's been sleeping through the night since she was four months old" and watching their mouth drop. Of course I share the Dreamland Baby Sleep Sack and Happiest Baby on the Block book with them because every parent deserves a good night's sleep.
